ISA offers two certification tracks. Certified Automation Professional® is a designation for engineers with a four-year degree and a minimum of five years of experience. Certified Control System Technician is a certification is for automation technicians with at least five years of experience.

Steps to Become an ISA CCST

The CCST Certification is available at three different levels. You do not need to go through the levels sequentially. Select the level that you qualify for today.  

1. Determine the appropriate CCST certification level:

  • Level I/Technician: 5 years of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Level II/Specialist: 7 years of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Level III/Master: 13 years of education, training, and/or experience.  

2. Self-certify that you meet the CCST certification eligibility requirements. There is no formal application process for CCST certification; however, you must self-certify that you meet the outlined certification eligibility requirements. You may use apprenticeships, academic degrees (up to 4 years), the ISA CST Associate Certificate Program, and relevant work experience.

Steps to Become an ISA CAP

This rigorous program development and ongoing maintenance process ensures that CAP certification accurately reflects the skills and knowledge needed to excel as an automation professional.

1. Determine if you qualify for the CAP certification.  

If you are a 4-year technical degree holder, you must have a minimum of 5 years of work experience in automation. If you are a 2-year technical degree holder or an individual without a degree, you must have at least 10 years of work experience in the automation field.

2. Self-certify that you meet the CAP certification eligibility requirements. There is no formal application process for CAP certification; however, you must self-certify that you meet the outlined certification eligibility requirements. You may use apprenticeships, academic degrees (up to 4 years), the ISA CAP Associate Recognition Program, and relevant work experience.
